Bob! Okay so first I thought it was kinda cool that non-registered users of the site could post on the forums but now I'm thinking it's not so cool. It means that if I hop back on the site and for some reason am no longer logged in I can still post (not realizing I'm not logged in) and then can't edit the post afterwards. :S Plus it allows for more spammers to use the board if they don't have to register to post anything. Is there a way to block it so only registered and logged in users of the site can post on the forum? Might be something to think about.

Yes. I disabled the guest posting about twenty minutes before you suggested it. I didn't want to (it's a pain to register for yet another forum for a lot of people, especially those who might only come by once or twice) but it will help to stop the spamming.

Now in order for a spammer to post they must register, do the visual confirmation and then verify their e-mail. Most of these spammers are just computer programs seeking out websites like this, so they can't pass the visual confirmation. Most bots also use a fake e-mail address to try and register, so they can't verify it.

So having that all in place, the only spammers that can post are real people with real e-mail addresses, doing everything manually. And those I can delete, block and ban. I can ban their e-mail address and even the whole domain it's from, if need be. I can also block their IP address (but there's a very simple way around that.)

If this has happened to you, it has to do with your IP address. This forum is not actually powered by hugs, it's powered by phpBB, which is very very finicky about IP's. If your IP is not a static IP (meaning it constantly changes) the forum logs you out. Unfortunately, my IP changes almost every time I open or close a webpage, so I have to use the "simple way" around the IP address to keep myself logged in, at least until I close my browser.

I'll start a new topic about this soon. [Edit: No I won't. See post below.] I know at least one other user has the same problem I have.

Ahh... okay that makes sense. And yes my IP changes. I think it's static on this computer PLUS of course I use several other computers so my IP is seldom the same twice in a row.

Good to know the sex-spammers are gone hopefully for good! Smile Thanks Bob!

Hey I think I have the problem because it keeps telling me, invalid session, and then I have to sign in again. I clicked the little box to stay logged on but it doesn't remember me? It's hard to get my posts on because it logs me out instead!

Yes.

I've decided not to post a topic about how to solve the IP/log out problem. That could potentially help out any spammers who don't know about it. How stupid would I feel?

Instead, go check your e-mail. I already saw that you had some 20+ IP's logged from earlier. How frustrating for you; how amusing for me. I've just sent you instructions and a couple links-- don't worry, it's much easier than you think.

If anyone else has this problem, contact me and I'll e-mail you a fix.

None of the post I've read are showing that I've read them, they are all still marked as new posts. Is anyone else having this problem? Also I can never get the Emoticons to work in my posts.
