*walks in, pulls out wand, mutters under her breath and an explosion of monumental proportions occurs.

When the mushroom cloud and smoke clear, the room is black and filled with ghosts, skeletons, bats, candles. pumpkins, and black cats roaming around as well as burnt wood tables covered in decadent Halloween goodies and a sumptuous banquet of food of every sort.

alright. Halloween starts now.

*goes to fill a plate of food since it's been 2 days since her last meal*

As long as I don't have to eat or drink anything with pumpkin in it I'm in.

Do we have the Singing Saws or - as I hope - more ear-friendly music?

*touches wand to webs to disolve them from around Calcifer* Sorry about that. The instant HP kit (halloween Party) is a bit touch and go sometimes with where everything lands.

I need a butterbeer. Where'd that damned stuff go?

*wanders around peering about the tables and chairs in search of butterbeer*

Well, seeing as we're partying in cyberspace and I don't have to actually make or buy a costume ... I think I'll be Cpt. Holly Short.

*Apparates into the party room, grabs butterbeer.
Lounges on coffin shaped couch.

Dressing up? Who's dressing up, I'll be wearing my robes... The one day (release parties excluded Wink) that I can wear them!

I do like my robes though... They don't scream witch/wizard/Potter... I can easily recycle them. Vampire? No Prob. Royalty? No Prob.

Anyone good at grade changing charms? Just had midterms... Nervous... I hate tests! I especially hate it when my entire grade is based on TWO of them (one of which is midterm, the other is the final.)

So Jeff and Bob have clearly come dressed up like themselves from South Park.

I am dressed up to go to a Masquerade ball this year. I will have to take pictures of the mask I made. It is super awsome even if I say so myself.

It's going to be a long day tomorow. And a longer one on Saturday. ugh...

*takes a shot of firewisky off a kilted dwarf's stomach and grimaces*

Man, partying in different time zones is exhausting ...

Who are all these dwarfs? Hold on, is that the Tolkien plural or the actual one? *can't be bothered to check*

How do you hide behind a dwarf anyway? Curl into a ball? Smile
Nevermind. Happy Halloween everyone.

*starts tucking into a Canary Cream*

It's the actual plural. Tolkien's plural is "Dwarves".

*is a big LOTR dork*

I'm not dressing up until I can get into a sexy costume or at least a really nice one. As it is, I'm a big fat pregnant lady, and I'm not going there.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN to everyone!!

The plural thing is something I know, but I tend to get it mixed up once I start thinking about it, if you know what I mean.

As for dressing up, you could still go with the simplest of all costumes: throw a bedsheet over your head and be a ghost. Wink

Yeah I totaly get things mixed up when I start thinking about it. And Leslie is actually NOT a LOTR dork. I don't even think she's read the books.

*wags finger at Leslie*

I took the kids Trick-or-Treating tonight. I'm so exausted! The most crouded neighborhood in the city is where we went, because you can always get a ton of loot there. First, we went through our neighborhood. It was HOT out tonight. 80 degrees with the sun down completely.

*hides from wagging finger*

It's true. I have never read the books. It's also unlikely I ever will. Need to save something I've never done for when I'm 99 years old and unable to do anything else exciting.

*snort*

Went to a Masquarade ball tonight at a hot new piano bar (with dueling pianos) and it was awsome. Nairin and I had a blast and just regret we couldn't find anyone else to come with us. And we looked fabulous of course *hair-flip*

*Accidentally hits a dwarf in the eye with long flipping hair and catches the tray of cocktail wienners he was carrying as he screams and flings his hands up to his eyes*

oops.

Mmmm weenies... *munches*

You'll get no wagging finger from me. If it hadn't been for Peter Jackson I probably wouldn't have read the books either. But after I saw Fellowship I just needed to know how the story would continue and I definitely didn't want to wait a whole year to find out.

Dueling piano. Cool. *wishes she'd been there*
So what about those pictures. Smile

Sounds like a really cool Halloween party, Leslie. I can't attend cool stuff like that. I have a million kids who want candy.

Calcifer, Peter Jackson did a great job on the movies, but I find it hard to forgive him for a couple of offenses. Namely what he did to Faramir, and when he had Frodo go it alone in Shelob's lair by sending Sam away. I think Tolkien rolled over in his grave at least those two times. Oh let's not forget giving Gandalf's lines to Wormtongue. sheesh That was really sick!

But I guess I'm just a really big nerd.

I totally get what you're saying.
When I first saw Fellowship, I didn't know the books so there was no comparing of the two going on. But I definitely did that when TTT and RotK came around.
All in all most of the changes made sense though there were some really stupid unnecessary ones. (One that really annoyed me was that Denethor never seemed that over the top and insane in the book).
The main problem with translating the book to film is that basically all the characters are very clean cut. It's all very black and white with hardly anything in between. And while that works in the book I agree with the writers that it would have been kind of boring in the film.
What I disagree with most about the movies though is the fact that the focus is on Frodo, but that's just personal taste I guess. To me the books were always more about Aragorn assuming the crown that was rightfully his. Granted it wouldn't have been possible without the Ring being destroyed but still ...

But compared to what they did with the HP books ... well, I think I prefer the changes made to LotR to those made to HP. Smile

I think Jackson & Co. did an absolutely fabulous job. Yes, some things got moved around, but they added a LOT from the Appendices and I thought that was way cool. I love how they started the first film - giving the back story including scenes from The Hobbit.

The ONLY problem I had with the films was the way they ended the trilogy. Now, I can understand the need to get everything into a few hours, but Saruman's fate was just horrible - not to mention lopping off the Battle for the Shire!

As I said, I understand the need to cut down to a certain length, but that none of the real story of the return to the Shire wasn't even mentioned on the DVD was disappointing.

Ah well....

I would have liked to see Tom Bombadill too.

Jeff, I agree that the trilogy was done wonderfully. I also missed the Scouring of the Shire. Not at all a good decision to cut that out. You know I have the extended cuts of all three movies and I still wasn't satisfied with Saruman's fate. But PJ and Co were certainly more faithful to the stories than the HP directors. I think if it weren't for the integrity of the actors, and their constant questioning of why things were done in a certain way things could have been a lot worse. You talked about the inclusion of things from the appendices. MY FAVORITE inclusion was in TTT when Elrond related Arwen's fate after Aragorn's death. It gave me the chills because it was so right on. And there were more times like that than the disappointing times. When they lifted things directly from the books I was more thrilled than I can say. Wish they did it more with HP.

My favourite one of those is the scene with between Sam and Sméagol with the rabbits. That really made me laugh. Smile

I also loved the "of Herbs and Stewed Rabbit" bits. Oh I have an audio clip of Tolkien himself reading a piece of that particular chapter.

I also liked when they gave the narration lines to a character so that we could hear it spoken. My favorite of those is in Lothlorien and Boromir asks Aragorn if he has ever seen the city of Minas Tirith.

I usually am, but with the state of affairs in recent years I decided to finally register to vote. I would have liked Hillary Clinton, but Barack will do nicely - especially with the democratic majorites in both the House and the Senate. I'm very hopeful that we can get back into the financial surplus/strong economy/non-worthless UDS that we had before Bush took office. (I was actually considering petitioning for a 3rd term for Bill Clinton over the past few years....)

I voted for the first time yesterday - and voted for Obama. Let's hope I wasn't wrong. Wink

I have not been happy with Pres. Bush for a while now. That does not mean, however that I am jumping for joy with Barack Obama. In fact, I think it sucks. Just to let my sentiments be known... Barack thinks it's okay to let the little abortion survivors die. I don't support that. I also don't support all this big government bull shit he is supporting. I can see a time when I am forced to have medical care I don't want for myself or my kids. I can see a time when it will be okay for doctors to force abortions on women who choose not to have one. It is the end of democracy as we know it.

You may not agree, but I hate it and I will continue to hate it UNLESS Barack Obama can prove that he won't take away my freedoms. I can hope that he will try and protect my freedoms, but I doubt he will.

I don't really want to debate or piss anyone off, but there are a good amount of people who feel the same about it as I do. I am speaking for those of us who think this is the begining of the end for our constitution. It's was and will never be a "living document". And I for one want the government out of my life. Too bad it will be inserting itself more.

*groan*

I agree with you here. The only difference is that I realize that this process was started years ago. The Patriot Act alone took away many of your freedoms.

Obama will be trying to pass healthcare that would be offered to everyone, not forced upon them. The same goes for the abortion issue.

Too many people think that "Pro choice" is the opposite of "pro life" and that simple isn't true. Pro Choice INCLUDES life - it gives you the freedom to choose life, where as the "Pro Life" side of the argument would take away that choice and FORCE you to have that baby. What kind of a life can that baby expect being born to parents that don't want him/her? I think little Caylee Anthony found out the hard way.

No, the reason that abortion is legal is because forcing a woman to do something she doesn't want to do is illegal. Even God was pro choice! Yes hes chose life for you and I, which anyone who is pro choice can do, but he also gave us the right to choose as well. God gave us free will, and to force anyone to do something against their will (IE keep an unwanted pregnancy) goes directly against the word of God.

I hate politics. Especially american politics. And frankly I think no matter which way the vote swung you guys would all be screwed anyway. All the candidates were shit. Pardon the french.

I'm glad though that I will no longer have to listen to lengthy speeches on the phone from people who think it's their place to inform me which way I should be voting- nevermind the fact I'm Canadian and don't have a vote. I'm tired of all the mass media bullshit from it all. I'm tired of being told that good christians support McCain. Implying that anyone not supporting McCain is therefore not a good christian. I'm tired of hearing about Sara Palin's ignorence and idiocy, and about how Obama supports the murder of good christians in their churches and supported some riot in some other country that his brother was running for office in.

Sick sick sick of it all. The government isn't the one screwing over your country. They only have the power the people allow them to have.

I want some cheese. Knew I forgot to pick something up at the grocery store. bah.

Without mentioning any more from the "smear" side of each campaign, (which comes from the campaigns as opposed to the candidates) can you be specific? Why are the candidates shit? Why specifically are we screwed?

Aleatha Ingleton wrote:

Yeah, that's just a myth. In reality, the common man can do nothing to stop the government from grabbing more and more power (much like the Bush administration has done) other than voting differently every 4 years. The truth is that congress votes on policy to make it law, not the people. Congressmen can be corrupted, and nothing can be done by the general populace until their representative in congress' term is up.

It's not a perfect system - it never was. In fact no system of governing is perfect simply because man isn't perfect. But, if you're gonna complain about MY system that you've already admitted you can have no part of, you'd better start giving specific examples.

What specifically makes McCain shit?
What specifically makes Obama shit?

Why would this make them a bad leader?
What would you suggest be done about it?
What would you do differently?

With the current state of things here, (and then by default in the entire world) Obama was the berst choice. He has the best plan for re-strengthening the US economy and the US dollar. He has the best plan for better healthcare. He has the best plan to get US (and by default UN) troops out of Iraq. His views on foreign relations (that's you) are far superior than any other candidate's.

Feel free to tell me I'm wrong - that's your God given right, and one of the ideals that my contry was founded on. - but don't just tell me I'm wrong, tell me HOW and how it could be better within the available choices.

I am confident that everyone here can be respectful if we are going to talk politics so here goes.

The Shamiran theory on voting...
If you have money and want to keep it, vote Republican...
If you don't have money and would like some, vote Democrat.. Wink

As far as abortion rights... I would agree with Jeff... I am pro choice... That is not to say that I am pro abortion... I look at it like this, if someone can live with making that decision so can I.

Undying J. Champ wrote:

Smile Congrats!!! You picked a good one to start too! You will never forget your first election, that's for sure. Wink My first presidential election was in '00, I won't forget mine either... This was also the first election I voted in that my candidate WON! Laughing

I truly believe that we did have the right person win.
Internationally speaking, I am 100% confident that Obama was the best choice... If McCain had won, it would all but guarantee a war with Iran... If that happens, Leslie I'll be joining you in Canada!!! Wink

Obama got some negative press for having lived in Indonesia and gone to a muslim school... I think it is good! Having been exposed to that side of the world in that way he has exposure Hillary and McCain did not...

The Middle Eastern people causing all the problems WILL NOT respect McCain... No white man in a suit will be able to understand their mentality. Nor would they respect Hillary... I say this with 100% confidence having lived with an Iraqi born man for 24 years... AND HE IS CHRISTIAN... A.K.A. ONE OF MILD ONES!!! When I was in Iraq I didn't see ONE woman driver at all. Women are second class citizens there and the way they look at it she would have no authority over them, president or not.

I agree Jeff... A third Clinton term would have been great! Very Happy The Patriot Act is a crock of shite... My favorite Bush f/u is the No child left behind act... OR as I lovingly refer to it, the HOLD CHILDREN BACK ACT!!!

If McCain had won, it would all but guarantee a war with Iran...

Agreed. Whole-heartedly. Did you see how he was joking about that a few months back? When asked about his thoughts on the situation in the middle east, McCain replied:

"Well, let me put it this way. Do you remember that old Beach Boys song? Bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb Iran?" And then laughed! WTF?!

I respect the guy for everything he went through and withstood as a POW during the Vietnam war, but actively seeking out "the next target" isn't patriotism, it's insane & stupid, and uncalled for. And what would happen if he died mid-term? Palin is AT THE VERY LEAST as bad as he is!

Obama will have a lot of work to do just to get us back to where we already were 8 years ago, but hopefully the Democratic Majority in Congress will help that along. One thing I am glad for is that Hillary Clinton is still in Washington ready to work with Obama. Her work towards improving healthcare goes back to the early 90's. She doesn't mind getting in your face and really pushing something she believes in, and isn't trying to make friends. I have a good feeling that we will FINALLY see some real positive steps taken, as far as healthcare goes, in the next 4 years. With Hillary really pushing the issue, a president that agrees with her that can really leverage some weight behind her, and a Democratic majority, it would take a lot for there not to be some sort of improvement.

The same goes for economic policy, renewable resources for cleaner power, and foriegn relations. For the first time in a long time I genuinely feel good about where the country is headed, and am eager to see some action.

Yes, I think it will. If you want to read a book about how the president uses his power, look at "With the Stroke of a Pen" By Kenneth Mayer. I read it for extra credit last semester... AMAZING seeing it in black and white.

I know this hasn't ever come up, but the CEO of my Mom's company is one of Obama's campiagn advisers... she is helping him with the transition now... I am very excited. I wish I could have hit her up for tickets to the rally in Chi-town.

You know what is sad about the "8 years ago" position? It only took one year for it to get screwed up! My poli-sci teacher showed us a graph of the national debt back over 50 years... It showed how in one year after Bush Sr. it went from a trillion dollar deficit to a super mega surplus... Bush Jr took one year to bring it back to a trillion dollar deficit, and that graph didn't even include the cost of the war.

Well, it wasn't profane or rude at all. As I believe that even politics can be discussed civily. And what's a little political discussion amoung friends, right?

At any rate, It was kind of lengthy, and I typed it last night. I really can't remember everything I put into it. Quite honestly, I think everyone can respect that I am pro-life for reasons not having to do with religion. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I respect everyone's right to have one even if I don't agree.

Leslie, you know I love you. We Americans are VERY passionate about our politics. It is something we treasure about our system. We all feel we are right about what we fight for. I do agree It can get very dirty. I could do with a LOT less of that. And I am in agreement with Jeff about how much control we have over Washington. We can only elect people who run based on what they say they stand for. If they don't live up to our expectations we can only wait and elect someone new who may or may not live up to our previous expectations. By then the damage has been done.
