I though the topic switched away from Gambon around mid-page. See my comment offering "Gandalf vs. Dumbledore." (I'm confused too.......) Confused

Dumbledore vs Gandalf...

Gandalf vs Dumbledore...

Of course they wouldn't fight each other, but we could still have a "versus" by comparing how well they'd each do against a range of common foes. So it's really Gandalf vs. the balrog c.f. Dumbledore vs. the balrog or Gandalf vs. Voldemort c.f. Dumbledore vs. Voldemort.

Dumbledore's magic is far more versatile (and used much more frequently). He wouldn't have to wait for an eagle to escape from the top of Orthanc, nor would he be thwarted by the weather and plead "I cannot burn snow!"

Gandalf, on the other hand, could never Conjure several hundred sleeping bags. And his best weapon in close-quarters fighting is... a sword.

In order for Gandalf to have advantage, the situation must be something the Valar have instructed him to handle (and thus deputed the necessary powers). We see this in action when he is raised to the White and given authority to deal with Saruman -- he breaks Saruman's staff (by comparison, Dumbledore could not break Voldemort's wand in the middle of a duel). But of course, when the matter does involve such a level of authority, Gandalf's power ultimately comes from Eru, which hardly allows for a fair contest.

Aleatha Ingleton - I would back Yoda over Gandalf or Dumbledore anyday.

But why? Look at the demonstrated combat abilities of Darth Vader, who not only has a higher metachlorien count but has embraced the Dark Side of the Force. What powers does he have aside from his light saber? Throwing things? The long-distance-strangle is slow and totally impractical against an upper-echelon opponent (e.g., Voldemort or the Balrog).

Now how 'bout throwing Belgarath and Lews Therin Telamon into the fray? ;-)

Oh... and...

BOB, YOU SHOULD DO A SONG ABOUT the Dursleys at #12 Grimmauld Place, I think. Not only does it have comic potential, it's a sure-fire thing for book seven, which will make you look more clever (not that you need it, of course).

Oh man... I'd back Belgarath. His power is pretty well limited only to his subsequent will, plus he's essentially immortal. Lews Therin Telamon is currently dead, insane, and riding along spiritual side-saddle with Rand Al'Thor. No contest at all in my oppinion. The One Power has too many limits and the Will and the Word too few.

Yoda would beat Gandalf and Dumbledore in a fight because he is far more canny and he knows how to use little power to great effect. The force is a great deal like the will and the word. It's mostly limited to the limits of its wielder (or so it seems)

Leslie and I were talking about the latest movie and it's odd moments last night, and she suggested a new song...
In honor of Lupin's slow motion attempt to bugger Harry
A Wizarding commercial tune selling a certain nefarious type of product...

SlideEazy's
Slickarse
Cream

Available right around the bend in knockturn alley... at the Adult witches Emporium

of course I just want to hear Voldemort saying "Wormtail come here, I have a job for you..." or " wormtail, do you have it?" Yes my lord

And of course Bob could always include Alberforth and his goats...
